Faroe Islands first Place to Go in 2014

New York Times – 52 Places to Go in 2014

READER’S CHOICE: JANUARY

53. Faroe Islands

The Faroe Islands are an archipelago in the North Atlantic Ocean, about halfway between Norway and Iceland (though actually a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark), with a population of fewer than 50,000 people. I was born and raised in the Faroes, then moved to London to study. But I was drawn back, and returned in 2009. The islands offer stunning natural beauty — this photo, of sunset at the village of Gasadalur, was taken in the summer of 2012 — and a unique Nordic experience.
